On behalf of my 2 year old son, my grandfather, my mother, and my father, I send deepest condolences to your family. We are all wishing you peace of mind and heart during this time, and love and joy from this time on. To our beloved doctor: My son is too small to understand where "the McDonalds lady" has gone, but I know he felt comforted by your gentle smile and voice--even when you stuck a shot in his leg on multiple occasions. From him, I say "thank you". His father, who met you only a few times while holding said leg, says "thank you" too. My grandfather is blind and is not comfortable navigating a room full of people. To the family of Dr. MacDonald: We were so sorry to hear of Dr. MacDonald's passing. We were blessed to have her as our family doctor since she started her practice in Chatham. It feels like we not only lost our doctor, but a good friend as well. There was never a time when we felt she didn't have the time to listen to our concerns or those of Brad's parents, Marilyn and Leo, as well. Her compassion and care will be always be remembered by all members of our family. Often she would provide some comic relief during our visits with her and always made us feel comfortable no matter what we were there to see her for. We heard a quote just yesterday.... "A life without purpose is meaningless." That certainly does not describe Dr. MacDonald as it was evident that her life was full of purpose combined with compassion and care for those she served in her practice. We had much respect for her as our doctor and as a friend, and we will miss her as well. Please know that we keep all of you in our prayers during this difficult time of loss. Rob, Adriana, Kevin and family, Our sincere and deepest condolence to you and all of Avril's family. This lady known to you as a sister, wife, mother, aunt, friend and one of Chatham-Kent's best family doctor is a great loss for you and the lives of so many that she touched through her talent, devotion, compassion and love. Like many, we too, were patients of hers since she opened her practice in this community. Today, I would not be writing this without this little lady. On two occasions she saved my life and on many occasions, my son, Keith's life. The day my son was born, she had a picnic planned with her own family but when things went wrong, she attended the hospital and never left until it was safe to do so. Her words, "if its the last thing I do, I will fix this child", has rang in my ears for nearly two decades now and will remain in my heart forever because as of three months ago, we finally received confirmation that he is "fixed" and no longer suffers with kidney disease. In reading all the posted condolences it is clear that her manner in which she approached her profession was consistent with every patient. We all have our own special memories with your beloved Avril. Like many, we will never forget the many hours of devotion and attention she afforded to us as her patient. Her ability to build special bonds with all of us individually was astronomical and is definitely a loss for us as we move forward without her. When we moved from the community, there was no question that we would maintain our relationship with this very dedicated and committed doctor. At times, she was amazed by this fact but we told her, there is no other doctor that we would trust with our health. She is the reason we are both still here today to share in the pain of this tragic loss. It is a helpless feeling we share that we could not be there to "fix" our dear doctor as she "fixed" so many. We will miss her desperately. The impact this one little lady has left on so many will be remembered and treasured in the community for years to come. A true loss. We move forward with our many memories of special difficult times we shared with her knowing that a true angel touched our hearts. To the family, please know our best thoughts, prayers and love are with you during this most difficult of time, now and in the coming days. May your own special memories comfort and guide you as you rise and shine in her legacy and strive to make one of your own. Rest in Peace our dear friend and doctor. May the Angels wrap Their Wings around U to comfort U through this Very sad time.... We Both were pregnant with Our 1st child together & due within a few weeks of each other, but since I went a month early, Dr Mac (with Adriana on board) was able to be there, to coach & comfort Me, since the Dad went back Home to sleep.... Needless to say, Dr Mac was there to guide Me through, when I left My Son's Father 9 months later.... Dr Mac had somewhat of a psychic sense, which We talked about at a few appointments. Without speaking a word of Your other ailments or troubles, even if You tried to hide them, Dr Mac just knew, when You Really & Truly needed Her care & She was Always there in those times.... She brought it out in Me a few times & She made some bang-on (let's check on this) calls with Me as well.... There is So Much I could write about & how I Truly admired Her Compassion & Strength & Judgement & Advice & Her way with words (without telling You what to do), but She could do that too.... Dr Mac read People Very well & knew how to talk to each one of Us, to get Her point across while accessing Us & to that I say, 'A Huge Thank U to U Dr Mac, & just for being You'.... & Thank You Rob, Adriana & Kevin for Sharing Your Beautiful Wife & Mother with Us.... ~*~*~Rest in Paradise Dr Mac~*~*~

Dr. Macdonald was my family doctor for my entire life. Even when I moved out of Chatham-Kent I refused to change family doctors and made the trip home when necessary. I know everyone will say their doctors care about their patients, because it is their job to do so. Dr. Macdonald didn't just care about me as a patient, but as a person and a friend. I trusted her to always have my best interests at heart for this reason, and she will be sorely missed. I wish I could make the trip home for the funeral but can't get away on short notice, either way I want her family to know she will continue to be my only, ever, "family" doctor.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this. We have been a patient of Dr MacDonald for 25 years. Even at our first initial meeting she was making us laugh. She knew we were not from Chatham, she always had a keen eye for detail. I guess it was how we were all dressed up (coming straight from work). Throughout the years there were some GREAT celebrations (helping with the births of my sons - Mitchell and Trent) and there were some really hard times (immediate family deaths due to cancer and my kids frequent visits to the hospital in the middle of the night). I remember when I experienced a great loss (miscarriage) between the births of my two sons. She stayed with me at the hospital until my husband arrived. She was the one to make the call to my husband Jamie to let him know the situation. Even at the low point she tried to make me feel better and comfort me. She was always there with that great smile and a joke to lighten the mood. I was always surprised when she would remember every little detail about my family and our history. She was not just our Doctor but part of our family. She will be deeply missed by our family and all her patients. Thank you for everything! RIP Dr MacDonald......until we meet again! I shared on call duties with Avril for our family practice patients at the CKHA for many years. Avril always saw herself as a servant of her patients best care. She was willing to take on the care of patients who didn't have a family doctor even though she always had more than enough to do already. Words cannot describe how Avril impacted my family. She always knew what to say to each of us at the right time. No matter what we where going through she always saw the good in us. Avril saved my oldest daughter by believing in her when she was at her worst in life. Avril also found the good in my son, even when the schools said different. I have been a patient of Avril's since the beginning of her family practice and as time passed, my husband and two children joined with me. Avril has been a huge part of my family's health - she was present through both of my pregnancies and at the birth of both of my children. Dr. MacDonald was our family physician for over 12 years. I call her Doctor instead of by name, Avril, because to us she embodied what makes a great Doctor. It was clearly an inspired calling for her. She delivered our daughter Mia and has been an incredibly meaningful part of our family for many years. I have never met a kinder, more caring person in my life and she was one of the sweetest people I have ever known. Her smile provided light through the deepest darkness and dispelled all our fears. Can't begin to express the sadness our whole family feels losing Dr. MacDonald today. Avril seemed like so much more than just our family doctor. I taught Adriana in Gr. 8 and was a patient of Avril's even before that. She was there during both pregnancies and even let us slip in the side door of her office during all those first years with babies. She was also there during the loss of my father and brother-in-law AND made stops on her way home from an already long day at work to check on my father-in-law who we also lost to cancer. House calls! That's why she felt like more than just the family doctor. Did we wait a long time sometimes to see her...yes we did...gladly! Because we knew she was taking the same time and individual concern for other patients as she did for each of us. She would listen attentively and cared genuinely when illness or difficult times arose for us. She always made us feel like our children were as important to her as they were to us and we couldn't begin to ask for more than that. I still can't believe that she will no longer be a part of our lives, except in our hearts and our fond memories of a beautiful person who helped shape the family we are today. I know for a fact that I speak on behalf of both of my sisters in saying that as well. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Adriana and Kevin and Robert. We know she loved them unconditionally as she would often share how blessed she was to have them and how proud she was of them. Thank you Avril, for all that you were to us.

A few years ago my mother found herself without a family physician. Given her age and significant health issues it had been difficult to find a Doctor willing to open their practice. One night she was admitted to hospital as an emergency patient and it was Dr. MacDonald who, once she found out my mom was without appropriate health care, opened her practice and took her in. It was Dr. MacDonald who got her to see the specialists she needed in London, and remained actively involved in my mom's care up until she passed. I will forever be grateful for her compassion, advocacy, and dedication.

I am so deeply saddened to hear of Dr. MacDonald's passing. Our family has been patients of hers since the day that she opened her practice in Chatham. Please accept my deepest condolences for her family. She talked about her family a lot when I would go to appointments at her office. I know that she loved all of you and she will be missed. This was very sad to read! I am so very sorry for your loss! I still remember the day she delivered my youngest son, April 3, 1999. It was Easter weekend and she had plans to be with family, but stayed to deliver my son because she was away for our first sons birth. I found out later that it was her birthday too. I will never forget her. Again I offer you my sincere condolences!

Dr. Mac Donald has been my family Dr. since she 1st started her practice here in Chatham. My family considered her a friend as well being the person she was, she gave us all back what she could in explanations of health etc. We all valued her opinion & know we will all miss her confidence in our lives.Dr. Mac Donald took time for each of her patients & never forgot to ask if there was any way that she could help with any decisions of family etc. My family are going to miss her very much & the time she took to support us all when she was needed for our own comfort or opinions of hers. She was the person that confIrmed & helped myself to accept the fact that I had Cancer 11 years ago & how to deal with it all. Thank you Dr. Mac Donald for always being there when I & my family needed you & know you are resting in Peace with our Saviour in Heaven.
