Michael Jan Simon Wigcherink of Chatham, born November 13, 1951, passed away at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance on March 10, 2026, at the age of 74, with his family by his side.
Born in Windsor, Mike was the son of Betsy (née Roelofsen) and the late Julian Wigcherink.
Loving father to Michael James (Francesc Fernández Claramunt), Kristina Louise (Barry Darlington) and Nicholas Jan Simon (Samantha Pidcoke).
Proud and loving Opa to Alyssa Darlington and Ella Darlington.
Brother to Ray (Mary Gwen Girard) and Margie Hopkins (née Wigcherink) (the late John Hopkins).
He will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Former member of the Thames River Yacht Club.
In his younger days, Mike could be found windsurfing, sailing, and racing across Lake St. Clair. In recent years, he enjoyed cruising with his friends and family along the Thames River in the electric-powered boat he built. Mike was a lover of cars and could fix anything with an engine. A self-taught mechanic who built his first car at the age of 16 to drive to school, he was often seen under a car or touring the scrap yards for a lost gem.
Mike cherished his memories of being a Junior Ranger in Marten River, leading to many memories with family and friends up North at Wendigo Lake. Mike often reminisced with his family about the adventures he had working in the trenches, climbing the fire tower, and traveling in seaplanes. Retired 24 years ago from Ford’s former Windsor Aluminum plant, he will be missed by many co-workers. Mike loved his family and friends; he found peace in the quiet and was known for being a thoughtful, kind, and gentle man.
Cremation occurred with immediate family.
A Celebration of Mike’s Life will take place on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Aristo’s Banquet & Catering, 307 Grand Ave W, Chatham, ON, N7L 1C3, from 5-10 pm.
All are welcome.
