De Andrade: Agostinho Monteiro -
With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life defined by strength, sacrifice, and love, we announce the peaceful passing of Agostinho Monteiro DeAndrade who passed away peacefully at Riverview Gardens, surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on May 3, 2025 at the age of 90.
Born in 1935 in Vila Caiz, Portugal, Agostinho was the last surviving of nine children.
Agostinho is survived by his beloved wife Alcina Azevedo DeAndrade of 65 years. Loving father to four daughters, Susana DeAndrade of Chatham, Sonia DeAndrade-Scofield (Joseph) of Essex, Diane DeAndrade (Joshua Spronk) of Edmonton, AB and Melissa Hopper (Scott) of Egmondville. Proud Avo to his 9 cherished grandchildren Jenny-Lee (Rob), Crystal (Sergio), Adelia, Owen, Liliana, Hayden, Jackson, Parker, Huxley and 3 great-grandchildren, Alcina, Rafael and Santiago. He is also survived by extended family and friends who were touched by his generous heart.
Orphaned at a young age after losing his mother at birth, Agostinho faced many hardships early in life. Despite never attending formal school, he taught himself to read and write, mastered multiple languages, and acquired various trades—clear reflections of his extraordinary determination and intellect. He was the only sibling to bravely leave his homeland for Africa and then later settled in Canada, driven by a hope to build a better future for his family.
Through hard work and perseverance, he built a life filled with meaning and purpose, grounded in the values of family, faith, and resilience.
He was a devoted father to his beloved daughters and took immense pride and joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His love for them was unwavering and deeply felt. He was the steady center of the family—offering wisdom through quiet example, and joy through simple, heartfelt moments. His legacy lives on in their lives, in every lesson taught, every story shared, every song sung and every act of kindness passed down.
A devout Jehovah’s Witness, Agostinho found strength and purpose in his faith. He was an active and loyal member of the Parkside congregation at the local Kingdom Hall, where he formed lasting bonds with fellow believers. His life was a testament to the principles of love, kindness, and humility taught by Jehovah.
He will be remembered for the sacrifices he made, the wisdom he shared, and the love he gave so freely. His journey was not an easy one, but he made it beautiful—for those he loved and for generations to come.
A memorial service will be held in his honor, on Saturday May 17, 2025 at 1:00 pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 9375 River Line, Chatham, Ontario.
