Carter: Alma Lorraine (née Lucas) -

A resident of Chatham, Alma Carter passed away peacefully at the Chatham-Kent Hospice on October 27, 2025 at the age of 87. 

Born in Dresden, Alma was the daughter of the late Chester and Alva (née McCorkle) Lucas. 

She had a beautiful life with her first husband, Dr. George Carter until his untimely passing. In her senior years, she was happily married to the late Dr. Allen Churchill.

Loving mother to Jennifer Benn (née Carter) and Janice Carter. Step-mother to Matthew, Thomas, and Christine Churchill. Missed by son-in-law, Darcy Benn.

Beloved grandmother to Josh and Israel Benn and Grace and Adrienne Oku. Step-grandmother to Meagan, Isaac, Asher, Bartok, and Torin Churchill.

Sister to Marilyn (the late Bob) Handsor (née Lucas).

Cherished friend to all who met her.

She will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.

Alma started her teaching career in Chatham, teaching music for the Catholic School Board. Many years ago, Alma and Pat Kent established the Chatham Cultural Centre Chorale, directing it for over 20 years. Alma's professional skills and compassionate leadership style attracted many to join the chorale over the years. 

Alma was known for her strong faith throughout every aspect of her life, leaning on her faith to overcome any challenges that came her way. She is now singing in Heaven in the presence of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

A Funeral Service will be held at the Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham on Friday, October 31, 2025 at 10:00 am. Burial to follow in Dresden Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of Alma to the Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation or a charity of your choice.
