Obituary of Irene Woods

Woods: Martha IRENE (née Hewitt) -

Martha Irene Hewitt-Woods, a resident of Chatham, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance at the age of 96.

Daughter of the late John Hewitt and Jennie Patterson of Bothwell. Mother of James and Shannon Woods of Chatham, Jerry and Cheryl Woods of Leamington, Blake and Doreen Woods of Chatham, and loved grandmother of Rachel and Sarah and Kelson Woods.

Irene was born in Zone Township, in the family home. She was the 8th child in a family of l0 siblings. Cherished by her sisters Jean Tait (2008), Hazle Siddall,(2001), and Doris Armstrong. Tolerated by her brothers Donald (1945), Lorne (1987), Archie (1998) Richard (1992), Jack, and Ronald (1984). Also surviving are 3 sisters-in-law: Patricia Hewitt; Anita Hewitt; & Jay Hewitt; Along with many nieces and nephews.

Irene received her complete education at the Bothwell Continuation School before entering Teacher's College in London. She taught for the Kent County Board for 25 yrs.while raising her sons. After retirement, and many years of volunteering, she took time for her passion of "bird-watching". She was well respected in this field. She spent 5 years gathering data for a bird Atlas, as well leaving her name in a number of published birding articles.

At lrene's request there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will take place at a later date in Bothwell Cemetery.
