Obituary of Mary Ilene Gough

It is with heavy hearts the family of Mary Ilene Gough announce her passing on March 28, 2024 at Village on the Thames. 

Born on Pelee Island, Mary was the daughter of the late Anna (1978) and TJ Close (1990). 

Beloved wife of 27 years to the late Leo Stuart (1973) and 41 years to the late Alfred Gough (2019). 

Mary is survived by her children, Anna Clare Young (Gord, 2022), William John Stuart (Gladys) and Thomas Edward Stuart (Cathy). 

Mary was a loving grandmother to Paul Young (Brandi), Mike Young (Sanaa), Andrea Bursey (Jay), Jason Stuart (Tasha), Cam Stuart (Brandon) and Danielle Faber (Darcy). 

Mary will be dearly missed by her great-grandchildren - Emerson, Tyler, Landon, Holley, Carson, Matthew, Gabriel & Emma. 

Also survived by sister-in-law, Olive Close, several nieces and nephews. 

Mary is predeceased by her 9 siblings, sisters Lu Robinson, Betty Imeson, Joy Whittal, Jean Moore, Verna Dupuis, brothers, Robert Close, Ted Close, C.L. Close and Ralph Close, brothers-in-law, Neil Moore, Edgar Brown, Ben Dupuis and Rolly Imerson, sister-in-laws, Shirley Close, Stella Close and also several nieces & nephews. 

Mary was born on Peele Island before her family moved to Wheatley. When Mary was 20, she met and married Leo Stuart and moved to Leamington where Clare & John were born. In 1958, Leo was transferred to Chatham with the Department of Highways where Tom was born. After Leo passed, Mary went to work at Kmart in Chatham until her retirement. Mary married Alfred Gough in 1978 and they spent many winters in Florida. She loved doing crafts while in Florida and crocheting in her spare time. Mary also loved singing in Church. 

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the nursing staff of the 2nd floor at Village on the Thames, Chatham for their loving and compassionate care for mom. 

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 1, 2024 at the Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham from 1:00 - 3:00 pm & 7:00 - 9:00 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday at 11:00 am. Burial to follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Leamington. 

In memory of Mary, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society or a charity of your choice.
