Mary Ann Oakley

Obituary of Mary Ann Oakley

Oakley, Mary Ann (nee Bissell)

Mary Ann Oakley (née Bissell) of Chatham passed away peacefully at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the age of 83.

She was the daughter of the late Edward and Magdaline Bissell (née McGregor) and her stepfather, the late Ernest Climenhage.

Mary Ann will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 60 years, Kenneth Oakley; her sons, Chris (wife Catherine) and Mark (wife Cindy); and her cherished grandchildren, Kyan, Danika, and Makenna.

Mary Ann spent her life caring for others—both at home and through her work as a nurse. She graduated from the Mack Training School for Nurses in 1964 and went on to a career in newborn care spanning more than 30 years at Public General Hospital in Chatham.

She was an enthusiastic and proud supporter of her sons and grandchildren, rarely missing a figure skating event or hockey game and cheering them on with unmistakable energy. In quieter moments, she enjoyed watching football, NASCAR, and her favourite Canadian sports, including hockey and curling – and frequently sewing while she was watching.

On Saturday, July 4, 2026, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. and 7:00–9:00 p.m., family and friends will be received at McKinlay Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham. Cremation has taken place in accordance with Mary Ann’s wishes.

The family extends sincere thanks to the staff at the Complex Continuous Care unit at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance for their compassionate care and support.

In memory of Mary Ann, donations may be made to the Chatham Kent Animal Rescue or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mckinlayfuneralhome.com.
