Obituary of Zulma Maria VandeSompel

Zulma Maria VandeSompel passed away at Mount Hope Centre for Long Term Care in London on Friday, February 13th at the age of 96. Beloved wife of the late Arceen VandeSompel. Dearly loved by daughters Antoinette, June, Sharron, and Pat; sons Arceen Jr., Dick, Bob and Lewie; their spouses, her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her sons Joseph and Camiel, grandson Brian, parents Henri and Emma Lefevere, her sisters Laura and Elvira. Zulma is also survived by her step-brother, Beverly Lefevere. Zulma was born in Loppem, Belgium and immigrated to Canada in 1926 with her family. She married Arceen in 1932 and together they raised their family in Chatham, Ontario. Zulma’s husband and family were the center of her life. Her children will remember her with loving memories of the good times that each had with her. She loved dogs, her garden, reading and music. In her later years, Zulma was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s; she progressed through the disease with a quiet dignity. The family wishes to thank Dr. Yemchuk for his care, the staff of 2nd floor St. Mary’s at Mount Hope for their care and many kindnesses to Zulma and the family. A special note of thanks to Nellie Verwaayen who started out as a companion to Zulma and became a dear friend. Family will receive friends at the McKinlay Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham on Monday February 16, 2009 12:30-1:30 p.m. Funeral Service will follow 1:30 p.m. Fr.
