Obituary of Leona Van Torre

Van Torre: Leona. With deep sadness we announce the passing of Leona Jeannette Van Torre. Born on September 19, 1932, daughter of Gustaf (Gus) and Paula Lewylle. Leona passed peacefully on August 11, 2011, comfortable in her own home and surrounded by her loving family. Cherished wife of the late Roy John Van Torre (1995) since their happy wedding on May 19, 1951. Beloved mom to Paul Van Torre (Wendy), Laura Simpson (David), and Dave Van Torre. Predeceased by brother Frank Lewylle (1958) and sister Madeleine Vlasschaert (2006). She was a devoted "Granny" to six grandchildren: Craig Van Torre, Amy and Kevin VanTorre, and Ken, John, and Paula Simpson. More than "Aunt" to nieces and nephews: Dick, Ken, Kim, and Diane, Mary Ann, Rick, and Frank, Judy, Wayne, and Mary Anne. For many years, Leona was employed in the office of the Blenheim News Tribune. She also worked as book keeper for Warwick Lumber and for the family business R.J. Van Torre & Son Ltd. Leona was legendary among family and friends for her extraordinary devotion and care to anyone in her family: husband, children, nieces & nephews, grandchildren, parents, and even elderly neighbours. Many of the town will remember her from her early morning walks throughout Blenheim, where she had lived for her entire adult years. She will be sadly missed. Family will receive friends at the McKinlay Funeral Home, 141 Park Street, Blenheim on Monday, August 15, 2011 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. In keeping with Leona's wishes, a Family Service will follow at the Funeral Home to celebrate her life with a small group of her friends with Fr. Greg Mulligan of St. Mary's Catholic Church officiating. Cremation with interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Blenheim. Donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada would be appreciated.
