Obituary of Leonard David 'Len' Carnegie

CARNEGIE: Leonard David “Len”– A resident of Ridgetown, and formerly of Highgate and Duart, Len Carnegie passed away at the Village on the Ridge, Ridgetown on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at the age of 90. Born in Duart, Len was the son of the late Cecil James and Myrtle Mae (McKinnon) Carnegie. Beloved husband of 68 years to Olive Mae “Dixie” (nee Leitch). Loving father of Linda Fleming (Rick) of Midland, Kathleen Mae Vandenheuvel (René) of R.R. #1 Muirkirk and Thomas David Carnegie (Laurel) of Strathroy. Proud grandfather of David Geelen, Jim Geelen, Dennis Geelen, Tammy Richards, Tracy Vanderlip, Todd Ameel, Jeffry Fleming, Danielle Fleming, Krista Carnegie and Kayla Carnegie. Great-grandfather of 21 great-grandchildren. Dear brother to Rachel James (late Alex) of Wardsville. Also missed by several nieces, nephews, friends and extended family. Leonard was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 335 Highgate, having served as President for 3 terms and later as Secretary/Treasurer. He saw action overseas during WWII with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry, being wounded in Germany. Leonard had worked for Ontario Hydro for 35 years, retiring in 1983. He was also a member of the former Duart Presbyterian Church since 1938, serving as an elder, on the board of managers, as a choir member and a Sunday school teacher. Family will receive friends at the Funeral Home, 76 Main Street East, Ridgetown on Thursday from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at the Funeral Home at 1:30p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2014 with Rev. John Giurin officiating. Cremation to follow with a private family interment at Duart Cemetery at a later date. Donations made in memory of Len to the Duart Cemetery, the Salvation Army or St. James Presbyterian Church would be appreciated.
