Hartley Vidler

Obituary of Hartley Robert Vidler

VIDLER, Hartley Robert, a resident of Erieau, passed away peacefully at his residence with his devoted daughter Connie Vidler by his side on Sunday, July 27, 2014 at the age of 83. Beloved husband to the late Mary Lou (2007). Loving father of the sunshine in his life, Connie Vidler (Dan Thomas) of Erieau and the late Robert ‘Bob’ Vidler (1973). Cherished grandfather of Robert Demeurichy (Sarah), Richard Demeurichy (Mark), Ryan Demeurichy (Amy), Lori Turner and Chris Thomas. Dear great-grandfather of Deacon and Declan ‘Charlie’ Demeurichy, Taylor and Luke Turner, and Daisy Wood. Predeceased by his brothers John, OJ and George Vidler. Hartley will be dearly missed by his loving sister Mary Remington and his best buddy and travelling companion, Gordon McCormick. Hartley was committed to this tiny fishing village. His heart and soul was Erieau. His love for Erieau could be seen on his license plate. He was an Entrepreneur, Council Member from 1970-1975, School Board, Cub and Sea Scout Master, Sertoma Club President, Erieau Fireman, Search & Rescue, Coast Guard Auxiliary, First Rescue Unit Established out of Erieau with the Bobby V, Chartered President, Erieau Ice Company. He was the owner and operator of the Erieau Packers, Erieau Marina and President of Erieau Lands. Hartley was a loving husband and father that saw that his family was well taken care of and he did this all on a grade eight education. With all his credentials, Hartley was very down to earth, humble, and had a great sense of humour that showed through the poems he wrote. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word to say. As a boss, he never expected his employees to do anything he wouldn't do and would work side by side until all the fish were packed. He would rather be in the background doing and giving, rather in the forefront receiving accolades. Hartley left a book with instructions that read “Keep it short, I hate long goodbyes!” and on the last page, “Hey! This is the last funeral I am going to!” He’s a guy who liked radish sandwiches, fishing, his family, and was always looking for a bargain and considered it a splurge to buy a new pair of shoes over $20. Perhaps there is a little “Hartley” in all of us.
