Obituary of George Fredrick Meyers

MEYERS: George Fredrick - George was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 5, 1923 to George Fredrick Meyers and Bertha May Henry. He came to Canada at age 5 after his father passed away. He went to school at Clearville. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943. He trained in Red Deer, Alberta, and was sent overseas and stationed at Torquay, England. Honourably discharged on December 16, 1945, George began farming in Clearville. Surviving is wife Nancy (Mandryck), daughter Shirley Mazzola (Linda) of Las Vegas, Nevada, son George Henry Meyers of Highgate and two grandchildren Michelle and George Jr. of Windsor. George was a grandson to Col. George Henry, who started a grist mill on Lake Erie. His great-uncle Philip Henry was the MLA Mayor of Ridgetown for 18 years - and Henry Street was named in his honour. His sister Lucilla Hilston (Dot) was a composer of music, composing "Ongiara", written about the Niagara River on a trip from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. It was performed on November 27, 2004 by the Niagara Symphony. She was inducted to the Sports of Fame for inventing Slo-Pitch ball for Seniors. Filmmaker Andria Lynett has plans for Lucille's documentary. A Memorial Service for George will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, Ridgetown at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 22, 2015.
