Obituary of John Ryken

RYKEN: John Cornelis- A resident of Chatham, John Ryken passed away at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance on Monday November 16, 2015, age 85. Born in New Ginneken, The Netherlands, John Cornelius Ryken was the son of Jan and Petronella (Debaets) Ryken. John immigrated to Canada in 1955. Beloved husband of 55 years to Francine Ryken (nee Gardien). Lovingly remembered by his three children and three granddaughters: daughter, Jeanette Ryken of Chatham; son, Robert Ryken, his wife Annette and their children Alexandra and Madison of London; and son, John Ryken, his wife Janice and their daughter Marlena of Chattanoga, TN. John was the last surviving member of his family, predeceased by one brother in Canada and three brothers and four sisters overseas. Brother-in-law to Betty Ryken of Chatham and Rita Ryken of The Netherlands. Also missed by many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family. John retired from Navistar after 27 years of service. He played competitive tennis with the Chatham Tennis Club, was secretary for children's soccer, and was a member and secretary of the Adult Skating Club. He loved volunteering with Meals on Wheels and St. Vincent de Paul. He was a talented singer, having been a member of the Blessed Sacrament Choir and the Lois Choir for decades. John was a world traveler who enjoyed gardening, nature, and the great outdoors. He regularly played bridge with his friends at various clubs. Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home on Wednesday November 18, 2015 from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.. Vigil Prayers will be shared at 7 p.m.. The Funeral Mass will be shared at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, 145 Victoria Ave, Chatham, on Thursday November 19, 2015 at 11 a.m.. Cremation to follow.
