Obituary of Betty Ruth Dunlop

Betty Ruth Dunlop 1921-2016. Betty Dunlop (Key), a lifelong resident of Chatham and parishioner of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, departed this life On Friday January 8, 2016 in her 95th year. Our mother died in the home of her daughter, Beth Myers, who had cared tirelessly for her mother since the death of Betty’s husband of 59 years, Doug, in 2001. In addition to her husband, Betty was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Doris (Satterthwaite) Key, both of whom were born in England and her brother Jack Key (1956). She is survived by a sister, Joan McKee of Napier, New Zealand, her daughter Beth Myers (Barry) of Chatham, her son Bryan Dunlop (Cynthia) of Winnipeg, four grandchildren, Matthew Myers and Jon Myers (Tanya) of Chatham and Jennifer Verrier (Ron) and Douglas Dunlop, of Winnipeg, five great grandchildren and sister- and brother-in-law, Bunnie and Jack Secord of Brockville. Following high school, she worked at Silverwoods Dairy till she and Doug married in 1942, after which she joined Doug in living on several airbases during the Second World War where he was serving in the RCAF. Following the war, she had two children. But as soon as they were in school, she was in the vanguard of housewives who returned in the mid-‘50s to the workplace, first working in an insurance brokerage, then spending many years with the Ontario Wheat Board before retiring from the Ontario Soybean Marketing Board. Following retirement, she and Doug travelled, wintering for several years in Florida, and volunteered the rest of the year with Meals-On-Wheels. They were both active in the church and over the years Betty was a member of several church groups, as well as the IODE. An avid knitter, she turned out socks some of her children are still wearing after 50 years. Our mother was a gracious lady who, though born here, remained English to the core and passed on to her descendants the values of decency, grace and fair play. Friends will be received at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Selkirk St., Chatham on Tuesday January 12, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 p.m. with the Venerable Paul Millward officiating. Internment will be in Maple Leaf Cemetery. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
