When I think about the physical loss of Aunt Detha, the pain pierces directly to my heart and leaves me feeling adrift. I was looking forward to us spending time together during the summer. She was so strong, energetic and full of life I still cannot believe that she’s passed on. On the other hand, when I think of the Godly woman who would phone me so she could sing for my mom, pray for my mom, every morning, noon, and evening while my mom was in a comatose state before she passed, it brings a smile to my heart that this wonderful, Godly woman who was a mother, grandmother, auntie, sister, is now in the bosom of God.
Even though we had not spent much time together over the years, the short time we shared when she was in New York last year to attend my mom’s Celebration of Life, is priceless and something I will cherish forever.
Thank you Aunt Detha for bringing such love and joy to my mother’s and my life.

After years of hearing about aunt Detha, I finally got to meet her at her sister's (Ivorine Thorpe) funeral service in NYC, last year.
I was deeply impressed by her grace, intelligence and warmth and got to really like her. We just talked, a few weeks ago via Gean's phone!
I can not imagine how deeply her loss must feel to her family and community who got to spend their life with her.

"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the passing of His Saints". As a prodigal son adrift in the world Mother Detha Burey and the late Reverend Owen L Burey, took me in off of the streets of West Windsor and re-introduced me to our Lord and Savior. 13 years later although he went home to the God where the Lord of Hosts had prepared a place for him. For the next 13 to years I've witnessed Mother Detha, continue to "walk the talk of the Gospel", while weatheing many storms in her husband's wake. Eventually becoming a reverend and our Pastor herself. Her unconditional love and exemplary devotion to the Lord and our congregation at the Sandwich First Baptist Church are unparalleled. Her ministerial and personal influence in and upon my life are enumorous and invaluable. I will miss you terribly and love you always dear mother and pasted Burey. Yet by the faith you engenders and nourished in me I Know that we'll indeed meet again face to face in the great beyond. Earnestly, Brother Kim ~ xo'z

We will surely miss Sister Detha. She was beautiful inside and outside. We thought of her as a "Big Sister" who was always smiling and offering us that delicious Jamaican food with lots of prayers too! She knew that I liked hats so when she saw a bargain, she would purchase it and get the money from me later. I/ we loved her like family and will miss her. I know, however, that she is in a better place with Jesus and her beloved Rev. Owen!
