Obituary of W. Lewis Sherman
SHERMAN: W. Lewis -
A lifelong resident of Thamesville, Lewis Sherman passed away suddenly at his residence on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the age of 86.
Born in Toronto, Lewis was the son of the late James and Myrtle (George) Sherman.
Beloved husband of 58 years to the late Jean Sherman (nee Little).
Dear father of Margaret Waldner (Garry) of Leask, SK, Louise Sherman of London, David Sherman (Cathy) of Thamesville and Jane Lawton (Kennon) of R.R.#2 Kent Bridge.
Proud grandfather of Adam Waldner (Kristi) of Saskatoon, Zach Waldner of Leask, SK, Teghan Sherman of Thamesville, Sam Sherman of Thamesville, Ian Lawton of R.R. # 2 Kent Bridge. Great-grandfather of Katelynne Waldner and Owen Waldner. Predeceased by his grandson Kyle Van Acker (2009).
Also missed by many friends and extended family.
Lewis graduated from University of Toronto OAC 1954 BSc Agr. At school, he made friendships that lasted 60 years. He farmed all of his life on the home farm on the river, where he raised his family with his wife Jean.
Lewis will be remembered for being active in his community. He was a 4-H corn club leader; a member of the Liberal Party; a Public Trustee of Thamesville School Board; Reeve of Thamesville Council; a member of Kent County Council; past chair of the Kent County Vegetable Growers; past chair of the Ontario White Bean Marketing Board; appointed to the Ontario Farm Products Tribunal and the Debt Review Board; board member of the Thamesville Medical Centre; director of the Thamesville Credit Union; a member of the I.O.O.F. of Thamesville and a director of Westover Treatment Centre. Lewis was the Kent County Agriculturalist of the Year in 1994, and was inducted into the Kent County Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1995. He was a founding member of the "Table of Knowledge" at the Lucky Kitchen.
Family will receive friends at the McKinlay Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham on Tuesday from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at the Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 6, 2016. Interment to follow at Sherman Cemetery, Thamesville.
