Obituary of Jozef "Joe" Smit

Joe Smit, of Pain Court, peacefully passed away at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance – Chatham Campus on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at the age of 80. Always remembered by his loving wife of 57 wonderful years, Susie. Devoted father to Mary Ann and Paul Edgar of Chatham and Susan McClatchey of Pain Court. Loving Papa to Susan and Glen Caetano of Chatham, Joey and Amanda McClatchey of London, Samantha Edgar and Mason Godden of Peterborough, Katie Edgar of Chatham and Ally Edgar of Chatham. Loving Great Papa to Noah and Spencer Caetano. Joe is survived by his siblings Ben and Irene Smit of Pain Court, Adrian and Priscilla of Amherstburg, George and Claudette Smit of Amherstburg, sisters Ina Kamps of Aurora, Martha Smit of Amherstburg and sister-in-law, Marie Smit. Predeceased by parents Adrian and Wilhelmina Smit, siblings Reit Smit, John Smit, Zacharias Smit and nephew Adrian Smit. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Joe came to Canada from Holland in 1953 and resided in Dover Township, owning and working as a Back Hoe Operator. Since retiring, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, making wood crafts and spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family to receive friends at the McKinlay Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham on Friday from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Vigil Prayers to take place at 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 10 Wellington Street West, Chatham. Interment in Maple Leaf Cemetery. Donations made in memory of Joe to the Heart & Stroke or Diabetes Association would be appreciated by the family.
