Obituary of Marlene Mary Somerset

SOMERSET, Marlene Mary Marlene Mary Somerset (nee Edwards), daughter of the late Frederick & Fern (Pepper) Edwards, step daughter of the late John Jakubec, passed away at the Chatham-Kent Hospice on Monday, October 10th, 2016 at the age of 80. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Nelson, son Blake (Karen), grandsons Matthew (Stephanie) and Brett (Sarah) and great-grandchildren Bryson, Wyatt and Emily, all of Alberta. Predeceased by children, Cathy Lynn (1958) and Brian Nelson (1965). Survived by sister, Donna Goudreau, brother, Tim (Maureen) Jakubec, sister and brothers-in-law, Mary & Robert Gilhuly, Nellie & Emile Rooms, and William Blackburn. Also surviving, special niece, Michelle (Dwight) Clark and chosen daughter, Joanne Ferrara. Predeceased by brother, Robert (Mary Willamine) Edwards, sister Betty Blackburn and brother-in-law Leonard Goudreau. Marlene was born in Detroit, Michigan, returning to call Chatham her home after living in Halifax for three years and Alberta for eight. She worked in numerous branches of the Bank of Montreal, St. Clair Grain and Canadian Fram. She was a member of St. Andrew's United Church, past member of the Kent Regiment Chapter IODE, Dame in the Hospitaller Order of Saint John and an avid volunteer for both the church and Meals on Wheels. Marlene loved to travel abroad and exploring North America in her motor home. After retirement, winters were spent in Florida and Arizona, with Arizona becoming her destination of choice. She will be remembered as a caring person who sent cards of both Congratulations and Sympathy to friends, quietly helping family and others less fortunate than her. She was the proud sponsor of a World Vision child, Rijal Bhes Raj of Nepal, for the past twelve years. Family to receive friends at the McKinlay Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham, on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. A Funeral Service to celebrate Marlene's life will be held at the Funeral Home, following visitation, at 3:00 p.m. Cremation to follow with Interment in Maple Leaf Cemetery Mausoleum at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
