Smith, Joseph Karl

A resident of Chatham, Karl Smith passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, February 22 2019 at the Chatham Kent Hospice in his 81st year. 

Karl was the son of the late Marvin & Evelyn (nee Gamble) Smith. 

Devoted husband of Teresa (nee Mastromatteo). 

Loving father of Sandra (Jim) Jenkin of Michigan, Ken (Sue) Smith of Hamilton & Lisa (James) Clarke of Chatham. 

Grandfather of Emily Jenkin, Erin (Ryan) Beasley & Kristen Smith and Faith & Zachary Clarke. 

Great-grandfather of Addison & Brody Beasley.

Brother of Patricia (Herman) Guilbeault of Essex and Drinda (Pete) Lauzon of Florida. 

Brother-in-law of Faustine (Dave) Deslippe, Dom (Marlene) Mastromatteo, & sister-in-law Tina (Don) Simpson. 

Predeceased by his brother-in-law, Frank Mastromatteo.

Missed by many nieces & nephews. 

Karl retired as a Butcher from A&P after over 40 years of service. Teresa & himself were longtime members of the Parkinson's Support Group where they met many of their close friends. Karl was an avid golfer, coached baseball, enjoyed fishing & spending time in his garden landscaping their lawn & pond. His five grandkids were his pride and joy, and he had a special bond with each and every one of them. He will be sorely missed by all that knew and loved him. 

The Smith family would like to extend their sincerest appreciation to the VON, Bayshore, Home and Community Care HNHB LHIN, staff of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance and especially to the staff of the Chatham-Kent Hospice for their love, care and support during Karl's time there. Special Thank You to Dr. Sullivan for his many home visits and personal support. 

Family to receive friends on Thursday, February 28, 2019 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm &  6:00 - 8:00 pm at McKinlay Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham. Vigil Prayers will be held at 7:00pm. A Memorial Mass will take place on Friday at 10:00 am at St Agnes Catholic Church, 52 Croydon Street, Chatham. Cremation has taken place. 

In memory of Karl, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Society, Prostate Cancer Canada or to the Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation.
