Obituary of Betty Darby

DARBY: Elizabeth Josephine 'Betty' (nee Smythe) -

A resident of Chatham, and formerly of Sarnia, Betty Darby passed away peacefully at her home with her family at her side on Monday, March 11, 2019 at the age of 90.

Born in Belleville, Betty was the daughter of the late Fred and Charlotte (Rose) Smythe.

Beloved wife of the late Don Darby and the late Cid Hillman.

Loving mother of Lucy Anne Knight (Robert) of Chatham and Rosemary Bellemore (late Joseph) of Calgary.

Predeceased by her sons Larry and Ron Smallbridge.

Step-mother to Dennis Darby (Martha) of Toronto and Peter Darby (Janet) of Hamilton. Mother-in-law to Janine Darby.

Proud and loving grandmother of Teresa Scherer (Scott), Rob Knight (Lisa), Mike Knight (Angie), Dan Knight; Nicholas Bellemore (Lyndsay), Lee Bellemore (Christine); Andrew Darby, the late Katie Darby, Christina Darby; Angelica Darby, Cassandra Darby and Rebecca Darby.

GG to William Knight, Oliver Knight, Dallas Knight, Benjamin Bellemore and Mollie Bellemore.

Predeceased by her siblings Jean Dillon, Bernard Smythe (late Marion), Margery Ford (late Jack) and Fred Smythe.

Sister-in-law to Kent Darby (Sandy) of Sarnia and the late Marlyn Darby.

Also missed by nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.

Betty was passionate about textiles and had a serious case of the 'Quilting Bug'. She treasured her time at the Chatham and Sarnia Quilter's Guilds where she had many friends.

During her retirement, Betty enjoyed her time working at RB Fabrics and Fabricland, where she was able to truly do what she loved: to teach and 'talk' sewing. Later she went on to teach quilting in her home studio.

Betty had a strong, quiet faith that she modelled in her daily life. She was a member of Thames Christian Fellowship.

Family will receive friends at the Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham on Thursday, March 14, 2019 from 3:00 - 5:00 pm and 7:00 - 9:00 pm.

A Celebration of Betty's Life will be held at Thames Christian Fellowship, 400 Park Ave East, Chatham at 11:00 am on Friday, March 15, 2019 with Pastor Don Read officiating. Cremation to follow with a private family interment to be held at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wyoming at a later date.

Donations made in memory of Betty to Thames Christian Fellowship would be appreciated.
