Obituary of Joyce Corinne Patterson

Born September 21, 1927 – Died April 16, 2021

Joyce was the daughter of the late Arthur and Dora Ney (nee Laundy). Beloved wife of the late David Patterson (2007). Survived by her only son William (Grace) Patterson; her grandchildren, Mark (Jackie) Patterson, and Mary (Chris) Holland, and her great grandchildren, Nora and Lyla Holland, Will and Diana Patterson.

Joyce was born in Stratford, Ontario, and at a young age moved to Port Stanley, Ontario. In Port, she attended the public school where her father was principal, she rode the L & PS railway daily to St. Thomas where she graduated from Alma College.

She learned to play the piano, and eventually became a piano teacher. Joyce also looked after a nursery school and helped with the duties of the rooming house that her parents ran in Port Stanley. Sewing and gardening were among her many passions.

Joyce met her husband, David, at the front door of the rooming house while he was looking for a place to live temporarily, having just started a job in Port Stanley after graduating from university. They were married 6 months later, with David starting a career at Union Gas, and moved to Brantford. A few years later their son Bill was born, and then came a move to Chatham, where Joyce designed and oversaw the building of the family home on Owen Avenue. Dave and Joyce enjoyed many years at their cottage near Port Albert on Lake Huron, with family and friends.

She continued to teach many piano students over the years. Joyce became active in Sprucedale United Church, assisting with the choir and organist duties. She was active in the Chatham Granite Club, where she is a Ladies Past-President. Joyce also canvassed for the Canadian Cancer Society, and the Bluebird (Arthritis) Society.

She was a big fan of the Chatham Concert Band, and was a regular attendee of the Wednesday evening concerts in Tecumseh Park.

The family would like to thank the staff at Blenheim Community Village for their kind care and compassion these past 5 years.

Those wishing to honour Joyce’s memory are asked to consider donating (donations payable by cheque) to the Chatham Concert Band Association.
