PATTERSON: Gladys Jean (nee Lowry)


Gladys Patterson, a resident of Chatham, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.

Born in Blenheim, Harwich Township, Gladys was the daughter of Marshall (1979) and Anna Bella (1959) and sister to Anna Ronson (2010).

Beloved wife of Archie Patterson (2001).

Mother of Brenda (Gary) Everingham, Bonnie Jane (1956), Jo-Ann McKay, and Blake (Kate) Patterson.

Proud grandma to Colin, Scott (Serena), Christine (Jason), Jill (Collin), and Taylor (Chris).

Great-grandma of Riley, Chloe, Gabe, Graysin, and Lily.


Also survived by inlaws Norma (Lyle) Mann, Bruce (Marlene) Patterson, Mora Patterson, and several nieces and nephews from coast to coast. Predeceased by brothers-in-law Burt Ronson, Hugh Patterson, Wayne Patterson, and Howard Nesbitt; and sisters-in-law Ruth Nesbitt and Eva Patterson. 

Gladys graduated from the Public General Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1953, a member of the Coronation Class. Known for her kindness and gentle nature, Gladys nursed in Chatham for more than 40 years, at PGH as well as Canadiana Nursing Home (now Copper Terrace). She also earned her diploma in gerontology from St. Clair College in 1987, at age 55.  

An avid reader, before losing her sight, Gladys had an extensive library and shared her love of books with family and by helping coordinate the annual Heather Club book sale in Chatham for many years. She was a faithful and active member of Christ Church (Anglican) Chatham. A long-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br 28, Gladys supported Archie during his service as a piper with the Legion Pipe Band.

Family will receive friends at the Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham, on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, from 11 a.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 1p.m. Those planning to attend are required to register by phone (519-351-2040) or via the Funeral Home website:

A Committal Service will follow at McLean Cemetery, 21711 Johnston Line, Wardsville.
