Mitchinson (nee Low), Helen Betsy Dakers
Helen Betsy Dakers Mitchinson (nee Low) passed away at Copper Terrace Long Term Care on Tuesday, April 19th, 2022 in her 97th year.
Born in St. Catharines, Helen was the daughter of the late Daniel and Isabella (nee O’Neil) Low.
Beloved wife of 74 years to Jack Mitchinson.
Loving mother of Wendy Twigge (late Barry 2018), Don and Tammy (nee Herzog) Mitchinson, Jack Mitchinson and partner Louise Curtis, Brian Mitchinson, and Colin Mitchinson and Lo Lanning.
Nana to Jennifer Tower, Jodi Fritz (Evan), Colin Fitchett (Paula), Nick Mitchinson (Ruby), Evan Mitchinson (Laura), Connor Mitchinson, Sean Mitchinson (Emma), Brittany Mitchinson (Nate), Sarah Mitchinson, Arielle Mitchinson (Brock) and Madison Mitchinson. Great grandma to Caleb Fritz, Zander Tower, Zoey Tower and Langley Tower.
Sister to Mina Graham, late Don Low and late Murial Slowinski.
Survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Helen was a WW2 Veteran with the Woman’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRCNS or “WRENS”) and served as a Switchboard Operator. She was posted to Vancouver, Montreal, Halifax, and Shelburne, NS. She was published in Our Canada Magazine about her experience and was presented with a Quilt of Valor.
Helen was an active member in the community including a founding member of the Chatham and Area Naval Association, member of the WREN Association, President of the Anglican Church Woman’s League St. Thomas Church, and President of Chatham Jaycettes.
Helen and Jack enjoyed travelling around the world together.
Friends are invited to attend visitation on Friday, April 29th from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and 6:00 - 8:00 pm at McKinlay Funeral Home 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham, ON. The Funeral Service is Saturday, April 30th at 1 p.m. followed by Interment at St. Thomas Church Cemetery.
If desired, memorial donations to the Canadian Royal Legion Branch #628 or charity of choice are appreciated by the family.
