Obituary of Betty Poole

POOLE: Elizabeth (Betty)

It is with sadness and regret that the family of Elizabeth (Betty) Poole advise of her passing on January 27, 2023, at the age of 92.

The daughter of the late Gabor and Helen Biskey, Betty was born in Welland and raised in Port Colborne, where the family was part of the local Hungarian community.

She is predeceased by her husband of 69 years, Kenneth (Ken) (2022) and her younger brother, Zoltan “Zoli” (Gord) Biskey and sister-in-law Janet.

She is survived by her four children, Kathy, Dennis (Andrea), Ken (Heather) and Margaret Ann (Frank) Ramsay. Beloved Grandma of Lauren and Alexandra (Darren); Andrew, Hillary and Aiden; great-Grandma to Everett and Henry, and sister-in-law Jean Poole. Loved by many nieces and nephews and their families.

Betty was a switchboard operator for Bell Telephone from 1946 to 1961, then left the workforce to raise her family. She was a volunteer with the St Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary, and a choir member of St. Agnes and Blessed Sacrament parishes. Mom was a great cook and often partnered with her mother in preparing Hungarian dishes for her busy family, and loved baking cookies with her grandchildren. She loved her camping and cottaging time with family in Muskoka, Algonquin and Rondeau Park.

The Family will celebrate Betty’s life with friends during a visitation to be held on Tuesday, January 31st from 7-9p.m., at McKinlay Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair St., Chatham. The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 1st , at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 145 Victoria Ave, Chatham, followed by interment at Maple Leaf Cemetery in Chatham.

Donations to the Alzheimer Society of Chatham-Kent, the Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation or a local charity of your choice in her memory would be appreciated by the family.

A special thank you is extended as well to the staff of the Sydenham Campus of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, and Fairfield Park LTC Home, for their compassion and care for Betty during this past year.
