Obituary of John Wiebenga

WIEBENGA: John -

John Wiebenga went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Sunday, September 10, 2023 at the age of 88. John passed peacefully with his family at his side at the London Health Sciences Centre, University Hospital.

Born in Baflo, The Netherlands, John was the son of the late Kees and Tryntje (Tillema) Wiebenga. He emigrated to Chatham, Ontario with his family at the age of 17 where he spent the rest of his adult life.

Beloved, caring husband and best friend to Grace (née Steensma) for 59 years.

Proud and loving father of Kevin Wiebenga (Melissa).

Devoted Opa and loved unconditionally by his grandchildren, Charlie, Emma and Rae Lynn.

Dear brother to Sylvia De Haan (Paul), Tracie Vanderzwan (Martin) and Cliff Wiebenga (June).

Brother-in-law to Elizabeth Harmelink (Milton), Ron Steensma, Yvonne Clark (Ian) and George Steensma (Donna).

Sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.

John loved to drive. He not only worked as a truck driver throughout his professional life, but spent two decades as a volunteer driver, taking people where they needed to go through CHAPS and other organizations.

John loved a good home cooked meal, travelling, and singing in numerous choirs. He was one of the founders of the Chatham Christian Men's Choir and a member of the "Friends of Buxton" and "Lois Singers" choirs.

John will be remembered as a 'people person' and a dedicated volunteer.

John was a proud member of First Reformed Church for 59 years and worked as the church custodian for 20 years.

Above all else, John's favourite pastime was spending time with his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and community.

Family will receive friends at First Reformed Church, 632 Lacroix Street, Chatham on Friday, September 15, 2023 from 11:00am until 1:00pm. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00pm for those who wish to attend. Private family interment to be held at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Chatham.

Donations made in memory of John to the First Reformed Church would be appreciated by the family.
